Job Description: Youth Services Librarian
Position Overview:
The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for providing library services and resources to children, teens, and their families. This individual will develop, coordinate, and implement programs and services specifically tailored to meet the needs and interests of youth within the community. The Youth Services Librarian will actively engage with children and teenagers, promoting literacy, fostering a love for reading, and supporting educational growth.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop, plan, and implement innovative and engaging library programs, activities, and events for children and teens, including storytimes, book clubs, workshops, and summer reading programs.
2. Provide reference services, reader's advisory, and research assistance to children, teens, and their caregivers, helping them access appropriate library materials and resources.
3. Collaborate with teachers, schools, and community organizations to support learning initiatives and promote library services to youth.
4. Oversee the children's and teen's collections, ensuring materials are current, diverse, and reflect the needs and interests of the target audience.
5. Maintain and update the library's online presence related to youth services, including social media platforms, website content, and online programming.
6. Conduct outreach activities to schools, daycares, and community centers to promote library services and foster partnerships.
7. Plan and deliver engaging and interactive library instruction sessions for children and teens, focusing on information literacy and research skills.
8. Provide guidance and support to parents and caregivers, offering resources and advice related to child development, early literacy, and fostering a love for reading.
9. Stay informed about current trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in youth services librarianship, participating in professional development activities and networking opportunities.
10. Collaborate with other library staff members to ensure a seamless and integrated library experience for all patrons.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field.
2. Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development, children's and teen literature, and age-appropriate programming.
4. Strong passion for working with youth and a commitment to promoting literacy and educational growth.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with children, teens, parents, caregivers, and community partners.
6. Proficiency in using library systems, databases, and technology to provide reference services and access resources.
7. Experience in planning, organizing, and delivering library programs and events for children and teens.
8. Familiarity with current trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in youth services librarianship.
9. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
10. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required to accommodate programming and community needs.
